Ask Dr. Johnson Topic of the Day: Breast Cancer

The lifetime risk of developing Breast CA for women is 12%. In essence 1 out of every 9 women will develop the disease. Many people believe that Breast Cancer is mostly genetic. In reality, out of all Breast Cancer cases, only 3-5% are related to the BRCA gene (the gene that predisposes women to breast and Ovarian Cancer). Thus, a majority of women that develop breast cancer have no genetic predisposition. I’m not saying this to discount women that have a genetic link to Breast Cancer, rather a wakeup call to ALL women- DO NOT NEGLECT ROUTINE SCREENING!
