This is a very tough topic, because PCOS is a “syndrome” that has been extensively studied, but the true etiology (source) remains a mystery. What we do know it is that it is a disorder that causes metabolic instability for women. It is believed that the true cause is rooted in insulin resistance ( the body has to produce an abundance of extra insulin to keep things regulated, because the body has a decreased response to it). This increase in free-floating insulin causes the imbalance of other hormones in the body. Sex hormones like Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone are “out of wack”. This imbalance causes irregular menstrual cycles, abnormal hair growth, and infertility (amongst other issues). All treatments are aimed at regulating hormone levels, which allow the body to function normally. I can type a dissertation on this topic, but I will stop here and open the floor up for specific questions.
